NARAN KAGHAN TRAVEL GUIDE

Naran Kaghan is one of the most visited places in northern Pakistan. Every summer, families and friends from across the country come here for the green valleys, alpine lakes, snow-capped mountains and the cold, rushing Kunhar River that runs beside the road for most of the journey.

The Kaghan Valley lies in Mansehra District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and is around 160 km long. Naran, the main town of the upper valley, sits at 2,409 metres and is the base for most trips to the lakes, meadows and Babusar Top. Urdu, Hindko and Gojri are the main languages of the valley.

Getting There

Naran is about 280 km from Islamabad — 6 to 8 hours by road via Mansehra and Balakot. Kaghan village is about 250 km from Islamabad, and Naran is a little further up the valley. Beyond Naran, the road climbs 70 km to Babusar Top, which opens in summer only.

Road Conditions

The road to Naran winds through the mountains beside the river. Cars can make the trip, but SUVs and off-road vehicles are more comfortable, and an experienced driver makes all the difference. For Saif-ul-Malook Lake, Lalazar and other spots above Naran, jeeps are available for hire in Naran.

Naran Weather

Summer in Naran is pleasant but cold, so bring warm clothes even in July — you can still see snow on the mountains. Early in the season, a tunnel of snow often covers the road at the entrance to Naran. In winter, snow covers the whole valley, the lakes freeze and the road to Naran closes.

Where to Stay
