From One Bad Journey to a Trusted Name

   The journey that started it

   In 2015, shortly after my marriage, I rented a vehicle for our trip from Islamabad to Muzaffarabad and Neelum Valley. The driver was unprofessional and the way he treated us was very poor. We arrived tired and unhappy, and I kept thinking that no family should have to travel like that.

   An idea gets a name

   At the time I was working as a banker and teaching as a visiting faculty member in the Business Administration Department at the University of AJK. Mr Imran, a professor from IBA Karachi, was visiting the Muzaffarabad campus for a conference on entrepreneurship and how a small idea can serve a community and create jobs.

   After the third day's session I told him about my experience. He said immediately that it was an opportunity. Together we discussed names and he suggested Vaadi Travels — vaadi means valleys. His advice was to start small, from Muzaffarabad to Neelum Valley, then grow from Islamabad to Azad Kashmir, and eventually to every valley of the north: Neelum, Leepa, Hunza, Skardu, Swat Kalam and Murree–Nathiagali.

   Convincing my father

   I come from a family of doctors. My father, a retired Army officer and a doctor by profession, expected me to join a multinational or go abroad after FAST. "What do you know about business, IT or rent a car?" he asked. As the only son of the house, and seeing my passion, he was soon convinced — and instead of just permission, he gave me the seed money to begin.

   One car, one driver, two years

   I bought our first vehicle, an NCP car, from the local market in AJK for Rs 3 lac. Domains, hosting and websites were all new to me. With no office and no staff, just one driver whose salary I paid from my own bank salary, it took almost two years to get our first client.

   Going all in

   After six years of balancing banking, teaching and Vaadi Travels, I resigned from my position as MTO OG-II to give the business my full time. There were many ups and downs, and my father, my wife and my whole family stood by me throughout.

   Where we are today

   Today we have an office, a technical team, a sales team and our own fleet of vehicles. We are one of the leading online rent a car companies in Islamabad, operating across Azad Kashmir, Skardu, Hunza, Naran, Murree–Nathiagali and Swat Valley, and offering customised family tour packages to all northern areas of Pakistan and AJK.
