Highlights Along the Route
- Panjgran and Dhani waterfalls — the first stops on the Neelum Road, with tea and pakoras beside the falls. Dhani is one of the highest waterfalls in the valley.
- Kutton Waterfall — near Kundal Shahi, with crystal-clear water and green hills all around.
- Keran and Upper Neelum — riverside village views, short hikes and sunsets, popular with families and photographers.
- Sharda — a peaceful town where many travellers plan a short stop and end up staying longer.
- Kel and Arang Kel — the upper valley, where Arang Kel is a dream-like meadow surrounded by forest and mountain air.
- Taobat and Taobat Bala — the last villages of the valley, with wooden houses and river views. Taobat Bala is 2 – 4 km further on foot or by jeep.
- Ratti Gali Lake — a blue alpine lake among green meadows, reached by jeep from Dowarian in summer.
How Many Days Do You Need?
- 3 – 4 days: Kutton, Keran and Upper Neelum, with a night in Sharda — the main highlights of the valley.
- 5 – 7 days: add Kel and Arang Kel, or a jeep trip to Baboon Valley.
- 8 – 10 days: the whole valley up to Taobat, plus Ratti Gali Lake in summer, at a relaxed pace.
Travel Tips for Neelum Valley
- Buy a SCOM SIM in Muzaffarabad — it is the main mobile network in the valley.
- The road is paved up to Sharda. Beyond it, towards Kel and Taobat, it is narrow and rough, so a 4×4 is the better choice.
- Avoid driving in the upper valley in heavy rain.
- From December to February snow usually closes the road beyond Sharda — the best time for snow lovers to visit the lower valley.
- Ratti Gali Lake needs a jeep from Dowarian (16 km) and a 3 km hike or horse ride.

March to October, when the weather is pleasant, the waterfalls are full and the meadows are green. The valley is open all year, but from December to February heavy snow usually stops travel beyond Sharda.
The road from Islamabad to Sharda is paved and suitable for family cars. After Sharda it becomes narrow and rough towards Kel and Taobat, where a 4×4 or jeep is the better choice.
Yes, Neelum Valley is safe for tourists. Avoid travelling on rainy days, when the mountain road beyond Sharda can be risky.
Yes. Snow usually falls from December to February, when the valley is covered in snow. It is a great time for snow lovers, but roads beyond Sharda are often closed.
Neelum Valley is about 280 to 300 km from Islamabad via Muzaffarabad, and the road up to Sharda is suitable for all types of vehicles.
Mainly SCOM. Other networks have little or no coverage in most of the valley, so buy a SCOM SIM in Muzaffarabad before you head up.
From Dowarian, hire a jeep for the 16 km off-road track, then hike or ride a horse for the last 3 km. The track is usually open in summer only.
