The Full 6-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Islamabad to Diyar Resort via Murree

Your Neelum Valley adventure begins at your doorstep in Islamabad . The drive north through the Murree Hills is the perfect warm-up — tea gardens, pine-shaded roads, and the first hints of mountain air.

Stop in Murree to stretch your legs along Mall Road, then continue through Kohala and cross into Azad Kashmir. The Kohala Bridge offers one of the most photographed river-meets-mountain views in the region. By the time you reach Diyar Resort, the city feels worlds away.

Highlights:

  • Mall Road Murree
  • · Kohala Kashmir Point
  • · Sunset views from Diyar

Stay:

  • Diyar Resort

Day 2 — Diyar Resort to Kutton Valley

This is the day the valley opens up. After breakfast, the road hugs the Neelum River as you pass through Muzaffarabad and wind your way deeper into the valley. The river is a constant companion — sometimes rushing below sheer cliffs, sometimes spreading wide and shallow over smooth boulders.

A stop at Dhani Waterfall is Fixed. The waterfall flows through a dense forest, and the cool mist feels refreshing on a warm day. Continue through Panjgran and Noseri before arriving at the lush pocket of Kutton Valley, home to the beautiful Kutton Waterfall and the serene Jagran Valley.

It's a good evening for a riverside walk — the light on the water at golden hour is something photographers come back for year after year.

Highlights:

  • Dhani Waterfall
  • · Kutton Waterfall
  • · Jagran Valley riverside

Stay:

  • Jagran Resort
  •  Kutton

Day 3 — Kutton to Keran

The drive from Kutton to Keran is one of the most beautiful surroundings of road in Pakistan. The Neelum River runs alongside you the entire way, with the Line of Control visible in the mountains on the opposite bank. As you travel through the valley, you'll pass hillside villages, cross wooden bridges, and enjoy cooler temperatures as you head deeper into the mountains.

Keran is a quiet riverside town that stops people in their tracks. The Neelum River splits here, and the view of the two channels merging against a backdrop of forested peaks has been drawing visitors and painters for generations. After checking in, the afternoon is yours to explore the village, walk the riverbank, or simply sit and watch the valley do what it does best.

A short drive beyond Keran takes you to Upper Neelum, where the landscape becomes even more dramatic and the crowds thin out considerably.

Highlights:

  • Neelum River Valley drive
  • · Keran riverside
  • · Upper Neelum viewpoints

Stay:

  • Keran Retreat

Day 4 —travel to Baboon Valley

Set aside any expectations you brought with you, because Baboon Valley will exceed them.

The journey begins with a jeep ride along a rugged track  ,part of the adventure , before a 30–40 minute hike brings you into the valley itself. The trail is moderate and manageable for most fitness levels, including older family members who take their time.

At the top, you'll be greeted by lush meadows, crystal-clear streams, and breathtaking mountain views all around. The area feels calm, natural, and far from the busy world. It's a great place to relax, so consider bringing a packed lunch and spending some time enjoying the surroundings.

This is also one of the best photography locations on the entire Neelum Valley circuit — the combination of open sky, rolling meadows, and dramatic peaks in the background produces images that simply can't be staged anywhere else.

Highlights:

  • Jeep ride
  • · Alpine meadow hiking Mountain views photography

Stay:

  • Keran Retreat

Day 5 — Keran to Muzaffarabad via Pir Chinasi

Today you begin the journey back west, but there's still a major highlight ahead: Pir Chinasi.

Sitting at roughly 2,700 metres above sea level, Pir Chinasi is one of the most accessible high-altitude viewpoints in Azad Kashmir. On a clear day you can see the full sweep of the Jhelum Valley and the mountains beyond. There's a small Holy place at the top, and the surrounding hillsides are filled  with wildflowers in summer. Pack a light jacket , it can be genuinely cold up here even in August.

After Pir Chinasi, check into your hotel in Muzaffarabad and take the evening to explore this energetic city ,the capital of Azad Kashmir , at your own pace.

Highlights:

  • Pir Chinasi viewpoint
  • · Muzaffarabad city

Stay:

  • PC Muzaffarabad

Day 6 — Muzaffarabad to Islamabad via Red Fort and Dulai Waterfall

The final day gives you two more gems before the road home.

Red Fort Muzaffarabad — locally known as Lal Qila — stands at the confluence of the Neelum and Jhelum rivers and dates back to the 16th century. Its striking red stone walls and the river view below make it one of the most historically and visually significant sites in the region. Even a brief visit adds real depth to your understanding of Kashmir's layered history.

From there, a short detour brings you to Dulai Waterfall, a lovely way to close out the journey — cool water, forest shade, and a final reminder of why you came.

Then it's back to Islamabad , carrying memories that will last considerably longer than six days.

Highlights:

  • Red Fort Muzaffarabad (Lal Qila)
  • · Dulai Waterfall

When Is the Best Time to Visit Neelum Valley?

Neelum Valley is open to tourists year-round, and each season brings a different kind of beauty.

April to June

It is the most popular window — the valley is vivid green, wildflowers are in bloom, and the rivers run high and fast from snowmelt. Temperatures are comfortable and the skies are generally clear.

July and August

It bring heavier rainfall and occasional road disruptions, but the waterfalls are at their most dramatic and the greenery is at peak intensity. It's the busiest season for domestic tourism.

September and October

It offer what many experienced travellers consider the best conditions: clear skies, golden autumn colours on the hillsides, lower crowds, and pleasantly cool temperatures. Highly recommended for photography.

November through March

It brings snow to the higher elevations, transforming the valley into a winter landscape. Access to some areas like Baboon Valley may be restricted, but the lower valley and Keran remain reachable for those who don't mind cold weather.
