About Swat Valley
Rivers, Meadows and Mountains of the Swat Valley
Swat Valley, often called the “Switzerland of Pakistan”, is one of the most beautiful places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — green hills, snow-capped peaks, pine forests and the cold, clear Swat River running the length of the valley. It is close enough to Islamabad for a short break, yet the upper valley around Kalam feels a world away.
Mingora, the main town, sits at about 980 metres, and Kalam, the base for the upper valley, at about 2,000 metres. Swat was once a centre of Buddhist Gandhara, and ancient stupas and monasteries can still be seen around Mingora and Saidu Sharif. Pashto is the main language, and Urdu is widely spoken.
Getting There
Mingora is about 237 km from Islamabad — around 3 to 4 hours by road via the motorway. Kalam is about 100 km further up the valley, around 3 hours on a slower road. If you are coming from Karachi or Lahore, travel to Islamabad or Rawalpindi first and start your trip from there.
Road Conditions
The road is excellent up to Bahrain. After that, on the way to Kalam, there are a few rough patches, but the drive along the river is peaceful and enjoyable. Mahodand Lake and some of the high meadows are reached by jeep from Kalam in summer. In winter, snow can close the roads above Bahrain for a while.
Swat Weather
Spring is mild and green, and summer is the best time for Kalam, Ushu Forest and Mahodand Lake, while Mingora can be warm. Autumn brings clear skies and quieter roads. In winter, snow falls in the upper valley and Malam Jabba opens for skiing. Stay away from rivers and streams during heavy rain.
